Breast Thermography

Breast Thermography uses Infrared Imaging to detect the earliest signs of breast cancer; signs that mammograms cannot detect. Breast Thermography imaging is based on the principle that metabolic activity and vascular circulation in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding a developing breast cancer is almost always higher than in normal breast tissue.

Menopausal symptoms

Vasomotor symptoms, including hot flashes and night sweats, are some of the most common symptoms of menopause. In Chinese medicine, menopause occurs because the yin, or water aspect, of the body is decreased. Although in the West we traditionally do not think of a water element, it is easy to imagine how water could be out of balance in the context of hot flashes alongside the symptoms of dryness experienced by many women at this time. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can help to realign many of these symptoms of a water element that have become out of balance. If Chinese herbs are not desired, acupuncturists may recommend Western herbs and dietary changes as well.

Premenstrual syndrome and hormonally-triggered migraines

Stress, fatigue, poor diet, and constitutional factors can all contribute to hormonal imbalances. Once the body becomes out of balance, patterns become established that create what Chinese medicine would describe as systemic blockages of blood flow within the body system. Hormones are thought to be a part of this blood level as conceptualized by practitioners of Chinese medicine. As the body prepares for each cycle to begin, these blockages create symptoms including breast tenderness, moodiness, digestive issues, and headaches. Drawing upon thousands of years of practice, acupuncturist select specific points on the body that are time-tested to relieve these blockages to regulate the blood level and thereby promote hormonal regulation.

Painful or irregular menstrual cycles

As above, stress, fatigue and dietary choices are some of the underlying causes of painful or irregular menstruation. The American lifestyle, which often includes a sedentary lifestyle, stress and limited opportunities for true relaxation, creates tension at a deep level within the body. When under stress, the muscles become tight, digestion is poor, and the body’s overall energy becomes tense and blocked. In Chinese medicine, there is the idea that the flow of blood is linked to energy, so over time the flow of blood becomes blocked as well. Stagnant blood creates issues such as clots, spotting, and can contribute to either unusually heavy or light flow. Acupuncture and herbal medicine as well as lifestyle changes can help to release these blockages and regulate related hormonal imbalances for symptom relief.

General wellness

Acupuncture is an amazing form of preventative wellness! Acupuncture treatments release endorphins, reducing feelings of pain and stress in the body. During acupuncture, many people feel deeply relaxed. Some common benefits of acupuncture are improved sleep and digestion, which in turn also promote general wellness. Acupuncture has been shown to improve immunity, and can be used during cold and flu season to help prevent these common illnesses. These are just a few of the preventative aspects of acupuncture, in addition to the benefits of general wellness counseling.
